Bleux celebrated his second birthday this past Saturday. Yep, he's a Valentine's pup! He worked at the Biscuit Co. on his special day while he played with his friends and got lots of scratches and kisses too. Bleux couldn't have been more excited to eat his cake. He grabbed it off the plate and gobbled it up!

All in all, he had a great birthday. Thanks to everyone who stopped in to wish him a happy birthday!

Poppy the Doggy

We are very pleased to announce that we are carrying first book of the Poppy the Doggy children's series, "Happy Birthday Poppy." Written by locals Jon & Verona Robinson about their loveable English Bull Terrier Poppy, this adventure follows Poppy at the park with her friends and stumbles upon her own surprise birthday party. We were honored when Poppy choose the Biscuit Co. to make the special cake which is featured in the book. The dogs sure look like they are enjoying it!

Marble - New Sponsored Dog ADOPTED!!

Can you guess how Marble got her name? If you think it's because she has a big round spot on her side... you're right! She's a sweet gal, 7 years old, who came to HSHV as a stray. Marble has beautiful red-tick coloring, and while she is a little shy, she is a typical hound and will follow her nose anywhere. She should be in a family with older kids (at least 10 years old) and in a family who likes to explore on walks! Marble was previously adopted and returned because she needs training the previous adoptee was unable to provide. Marble loves to hang out with people, and has been visiting us in the adoption center, where she's friendly with anyone who comes in looking to adopt. She is housetrained and she is ready to find a new home! Marble is a WALLFLOWER (orange): Shy yet charming canine searching for patient owner with relaxed lifestyle. Whew, we've had a busy holiday season! Thank you to all of our loyal, and new, customers who have helped make the season merry.

We spent much of November and December baking our organic, all natural treats and decorating fun, wintry ones too. Our pre-packaged holiday gift boxes containing a half pound of our flavored treats and two iced holiday treats were near impossible to keep in stock thanks to the great article in the Ann Arbor News. That wasn't the only place you could find us during the holiday season. The Ann Arbor Chronicle posted a wonderful story about our treats and newest rescue, Bleux. Thanks for the positive bully press. Heaven knows, the bully breeds need it!

Not to be outdone by her new brother, Millie was also in the news. Ann Arbor Observer turned our little Millie into a cover girl by featuring her in the Holiday Gift Guide modeling a Slide-On Bandana made exclusively for the Biscuit Co.. Her newfound celebrity has certainly gone to her head as her list of puppy demands grow.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BUSTER AND MACKENZIE ON FINDING THEIR FOREVER HOMES!!

Buster and Mackenzie are a pair of very sweet beagles. They are at the Humane Society of Huron Valley because their owners divorced. It’s hard to believe that these two canine companions were left alone, but here they are hoping that they will find a family that will love them for the rest of their lives.
Buster is 5-years-old and the larger of the two. He weighs about 43 pounds. Mackenzie is 2-years-old and bit smaller, weighing in at 30 pounds. Mackenzie loves to play with her brother Buster. She’ll chase after her brother but will eventually take the lead when they go walking together. Both dogs are housebroken and really enjoy each other’s company. We want them to be adopted together because they are a “Perfect Pair”. Beagles make fantastic family pets but we do want whoever adopts them to be very familiar with the breed. Buster and Mackenzie are waiting for you!

Today was the official groundbreaking for the new facility for Humane Society of Huron Valley. The Ann Arbor News has posted a video of the event featuring Mae, available for adoption, performing the "grounddigging." The new facility is projected to be completed in November of 2009. Donations are still needed and benefit both homeless animals and the community in general.

On Tuesday, September 23 from 8a.m. to 10 a.m., Humane Society of Huron Valley will break ground on their new facility. Martin Bandyke, from Ann Arbor's 107.1, will emcee the event while broadcasting live on air.

Poppy Mart

Pit Bull Rescue Central, where education meets rescue, is holding their 5th annual Poppy Mart auction on eBay to raise money for PBRC's Fund which finances Spay/Neuter programs and other medical expenses to assist rescues and caretakers of pit bulls. PBRC is THE source for information concerning pit bull education, training, temperment, fostering questions and adoption. It's also a great way to connect with other responsible pit bull owners.

Poppy Mart will open Thursday, September 11th and run through Thursday, September 18th with 100% of the amount raised going to PBRC's Fund. The Biscuit Co. is very proud to announce that we were asked to contribute a donation to this wonderful cause. Patrick the Pit bull

UPDATE - PATRICK WAS ADOPTED!! CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW HOME!!

Patrick is a 2-year-old pit bull with a great big smile and a gentle heart. He was found wandering as a stray and has been cared for by the Humane Society of Huron Valley for over three months now. Patrick has handsome green eyes and his favorite game is fetch. He’s a fun-loving dog who is naturally playful. He likes to go for long walks and then curl up next to you on the couch. Patrick eagerly waits for the day he will have his own forever home!

Patrick is intelligent and very active, so he's love to be live with an active family. Since Patrick weighs 42 pounds, we’d like him to be adopted into a family where kids are 10-years or older. Pit bulls make great companions. Unfortunately, media hype and unsavory people have cast a shadow on this loving breed. Irresponsible owners

are one of the major causes for all the problems the breed faces today.

Dog Swim

Join us for the 5th Annual Buhr Park Dog Swim on Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday, Septemeber 3 from 3 p.m. to 8p.m. The pool closes to people on September 1, but stays open two extra days just for dogs! Pre-registration is required at Buhr Park or online at A2 Parks Online .

The cost for a half-hour swim time is (1st dog) $7.50/$6.00 resident discount and (2nd dog) $3.75/$3.00 resident discount. Rain date is scheduled for September 4 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

We are excited to sponsor this event with our friends from Arbor Dog Daycare. So, stop in our bakery to pick up a tennis or rubber ball to fetch at the pool or a special treat for your dog to enjoy. Just remember he should wait 45 minutes before swimming after eating! ;)

Ranger looks for his forever home - UPDATE: Ranger was adopted!!

Ranger is a very handsome, chocolate Labrador Retriever who is 2 years old. He was previously owned but his owner had a job change and could not keep him.

Ranger is a sweet and lovable Lab but he doesn’t like being in a cage - can you blame him? It was hard for Ranger to understand his big life change. He gets stressed by all the barking dogs at the shelter, but as soon as he goes for a walk, or plays fetch, his wonderful Lab personality comes shining through! In the play yard, he seems to do fine with other dogs as well.

Ranger LOVES to run so he will need a family that will play and exercise with him. Ranger is a high energy dog and could use consistency in his training and a family that will show him the love he deserves. He should be in a home where any kids are at least 10 years old because Ranger is a big boy, who weighs about 70 lbs.

It was a warm, sunny day when the official "Leash Cutting" ceremony took place at the official grand opening of Swift Run Dog Park.

Lots of dogs and their owners were there to help us celebrate the happy occasion. We made some new friends and saw some old ones too. Our treats were a hot commodity and we were thrilled to make many a dog smile!

Do you have any collars or toys your puppy has outgrown? Or some old towels and blankets that you no longer need? A kitty bed that's left untouched in the corner? If so, then drop off your donations at our bakery! We have a bin just inside our door for your gently used items that could benefit animals who are currently without their forever homes. There is a jar on our counter for any monetary donations as well.

The first bin filled up quickly and was given to the Humane Society of Huron Valley. They were most appreciative to our customers who generously donated their items. We're sure the doggies were equally happy! The bin is well on it's way to overflowing again, so if you have a favorite rescue group or organization that are in need of items that may help them out then please let us know.

We are proud to announce that we, along with our friends from Arbor Dog Daycare & Mantis Pet Supplies, are members of the Local Dog Network!

The Local Dog Network is a group of locally owned and operated businesses, not franchises. The monies earned by these organizations goes to employing local residents as well as supporting the local economy. Join us for the premiere of the I Love My Pet Expo at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds at 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road in Ann Arbor! On June 1, 2008, Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor transforms into a tasty food festival! Taste of Ann Arbor and the Rest of the World kicks off at 11 a.m. featuring bite sized portions of culinary favorites from over 30 restaurants. Though dogs are not permitted at this event, Ann Arbor Biscuit Co. will be there so you can take home a "doggie bag" to your four-legged friend! We'll have prepackaged favorites like Cheese Fries & Pretzels as well as other decorated culinary delights your dog will want to get his paws on. The event is free to attend but tickets for taste are $0.50 and can be purchased throughout the day. 10 Days Until Christmas!

It's really hard to believe that there are only 10 days left before Christmas! The dogs of Ann Arbor have apparently been very good this year, because we're working extra hard to be sure we can keep up with the demand for both the crunchy and decorated treats. Don't forget the "bad" dogs too - even if they only deserve a lump of coal, we've got you covered! (Our black lab treats have activated charcoal in them.)

For you last minute shoppers, we'll be open from noon to 5 on Christmas Eve, but we'll be closed on both Christmas Day and the 26th. And for the lucky pets who will be ringing in the New Year in style, we'll be open from noon to 5 on New Year's Eve as well (and then closed on New Year's Day).

A wonderful thanks to all of the fantastic people and pets who stopped in during the Moonlight Madness event! We had such fun seeing all of you who were "up all night" with us. We're already looking forward to next year.

We're sorry about not updating last week, but many of the people and creatures in the house were under the weather. We're back in the swing of things, and getting ready for an exciting week!

First of all, this week brings the start of Hanukkah. A very happy holiday to those who celebrate. It seems like now that it's the first week of December, everyone is truly starting to get into the holiday spirit. We've got a lot of really neat toys and treats in stock, especially for the winter holidays.

On Friday (the 7th), we'll be taking part in the downtown's Moonlight Madness event. We'll open at 10 am, and will remain open until midnight. Stop in and take advantage of special sales. In addition, if you're a member of the Preferred Pets mailing list, you will receive a coupon with additional savings. Wow - time is certainly flying this fall! It seems like just a few weeks ago that we were so excited to see everyone in their costumes, trick or treating! And now, this week, we'll sit down and give thanks.

What are we giving thanks for this year? Most of all, that we've found so much support for the Biscuit Co. In less than six months we've confirmed that Ann Arbor is a town full of people who love their pets, and agree with our philosophy that pets are family. We're thankful for our neighbors and our regulars - people we didn't know a short while ago, and who now know exactly who Lucky and Millie are by sight! We're thankful for the friends we've made, and for all of you who have supported us. May this be the first Thanksgiving of many!

We truly do count our blessings that such great animals come by the store so regularly. Many of you do know our pets - Lucky, Millie, Indy, Smoker and Laudie - and we've come to know yours as well. We'd like to invite you to send us in pictures of your pets enjoying treats or toys that you've purchased at the store, so that we can add them to our Flickr set - "Animals We Love." When we first decided to open our store, we were very careful to express to our friends and family that we were opening a pet treat bakery. Not a dog treat bakery. A pet treat bakery. Because we know that dogs aren't the only kind of pets that people are passionate about.

We think that a lot of people are still under the impression that we're all about dogs, and only about dogs. Part of that misconception might be because Lucky and Millie are with us at the store everyday, and they're very obviously representing dogs as pets. But we're cat lovers too. When we first moved to Michigan, we were surprised to open the door to our new house and to find out that "the cats came with the house." That's how Smoker and Laudie joined our family. And if you think that our dogs are living the high life as treat and toy testers, you should see our cats - they don't even have to get up and go to work in the morning!

When you enter the store, just look to your right and there is a wall of cat items. Every day we have four kinds of organic treats - beef, chicken, seafood and catnip. Cat treats can be purchased by the dozen or by the ounce - and an ounce lasts a surprising amount of time (even with our spoiled girls!) We also have a variety of cat toys - happily tested by our girls for durability and playability. When we look for toys to stock, we look for companies that use all natural materials and organic catnip. We also like our cat toys to vary with the seasons - check back often to see what's new as the holidays progress.

Product Spotlight - Tuffie Toys

When we first opened, one of the things we kept hearing over and over again was that people had dogs who liked to destroy toys. Our dogs do it too - Lucky will work quietly and methodically until she's taken the eyes, or nose, or squeaker, off of any toy we give her. You should see some of the Frankenstein-esque toys we have around the house - toy carcasses tied together to squeeze every last bit of fun out of them possible.

We've been just as interested in finding toys that are sturdy, and can withstand even the most determined destructive dogs. So we've been really excited to discover Tuffie Toys - they're among the most durable toys we've ever come across. They're made from a layer of soft fleece, two layers of nylon, and a layer of PVC. They're assembled with seven seams, and then a layer of nylon coats the stitching. The squeakers are embedded in a safety pocket, nice for those dogs who zero in on the squeaker and just won't let it go. In the store we've been calling them "Tiger Toys" since the company did some of their market testing on Tigers in zoos - and even they couldn't destroy these toys!

Well, when we heard that even a tiger couldn't destroy the toys, we decided that we had to put them to the test ourselves. We all remember how sharp puppy teeth are? So we gave Millie, our official toy tester, one of the octopuses and let her have at it. Stop in and see the results - the toy still looks like new, and Millie was exhausted. Right now we've got all of these toys featured in our window, so give them a peak (or a squeak) and see what you think. So far we've been very pleased with their longevity (and that they tire Millie out...)

Last week there was a great article in the Ann Arbor News, about all of the pet related things happening in Ann Arbor for Halloween. Or Howl-ween.

It mentions that we've got Halloween toys (for both dogs and cats) and bandanas in stock - though, the bandanas are going fast! We've also done a lot of really tasty and cute decorated treats - ghosts, bats, pumpkins and skeletons - and cupcakes too!

Please stop by the store on Halloween - we want to see everyone's costumes (both human and four legged) - Millie will be decked out in her cheerleader costume! We'll be giving out candy for the human kids, and a free treat for the canine ones! We can't wait to see you!
